To give and to recieve...
Hand in hand they go. So much of our lives is about giving and receiving. We each affect one another in ways that we may not see or feel, but we do. Hence never doubt the importance of being. In and of itself the intrinsic value is present.
We can all have doubts about what and who we are, but in the end step back and see how much we mean to one another. Think about the support you have received from friend’s family and others. But in that same light see how much you have given as well, and not just material items but given from your heart. Time, attention and emotion, they each play roles. The value of each could never be measured in dollar amounts.
People who step out and volunteer to help the unknown should be recognized for their incredible efforts. However folks seem to forget that helping one another in our day-to-day lives is just as important.
If we all walked around with the greedy capitalist view of me me me, where would we truly be? Look how far it takes us in this world already. Step back and view yourself from another perspective and see how truly important you are. That amount is immeasurable. You know it sucks that a military has taken over such a truly wonderful statement "be all that you can be"; I think we need to take it back. We all can be so much more, but truly it should read, "be all that you can be and realize it"
Seek out your change. It can be hard and difficult, but each of us is worth it. That change will not only make you a better person, but all those you touch as well. The effect is a domino one hence never lose faith in that.

To use one of your favorite words...that was nifty!
And I would add to your giving and receiving idea...to give and feel as much happiness as you can for others. There's no reason to be stingy with it, there's an endless supply of it and the more happiness you give, the more you'll receive in return.
I'd be content with the people who live in my house happily picking up their crap. They can be surly to me as long as they clean up their own messes. In fact, come clean my house and you can be downright vile and cruel to me.
