Affect.
One of the meanings: To have an influence on or affect a change in.
We do this each day to those close to us. How many are there daily truly? If you no longer existed whom would really be affected? On a daily basis are we replaceable? Sure in most situations, but in some probably not. Those are the connections those irreplaceable one that matter most. They be life. Look closely, each day how many are there?
Do they matter? Or should they matter? Perhaps and perhaps not. We hope so and we try for them, but in the end much more may affect them. Keep trying, but why? In the end we be alone anyway.

Why keep trying? Because island life isn't all it's cracked up to be.
You take chances with your heart when you put yourself out there for friendship. But sometimes the chance is worth it and can make up for all the disappointments. Keep trusting in yourself and your ability to be a good friend.
